Greece Is the Word: ‘Krapopolis’ Is Not as Bad as the Name Sounds

Seems like Dan Harmon’s (Rick and Morty) animated comedy series Krapopolis has been in the works for millennia. It was supposed to have a sneak peek in November 2022 and then join the midseason lineup, but FOX delayed it until this fall.

Set in mythical ancient Greece, a family of humans, gods and monsters tries to see if everyone can live together in a “city.”

Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) voices Tyrannis, the narcissistic king of Krapopolis, who holds council meetings to address problems like loitering Medusas.

His mother, Deliria (Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham), is the shape-shifting goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices who loves being worshiped by mortals. “Our entire family tree is trunk!” she says.

Tyrannis’ father is deadbeat Shlub (Matt Berry), a hard-drinking centaur/manticore hybrid who considers himself the life of the orgy.

Half-cyclops warrior Stupendous (Pam Murphy) is Tyrannis’ half sister, and Hippocampus (Duncan Trussell) is the freakish but intelligent walking fish offspring of Shlub and a mermaid.

FOX has great faith in Krapopolis: The network has already ordered Seasons 2 and 3.

The series debuts with two episodes on Sunday, Sept. 24, following FOX’s NFL coverage. In the premiere, “All Hail the Goddess of Likeability,” Tyrannis tries to use diplomacy when King Asskill (voice of guest star Keith David) threatens to attack Krapopolis. Stupendous and Hippocampus try to strike the Asskillians first with a bomb-loaded Trojan horse. Deliria decides to build a temple to herself, which puts her in conflict with Athena (guest star Amber Stevens West).

Then in “The Stuporbowl,” Tyrannis hosts other kings for a series of games in Krapopolis. Stupendous is the star athlete, but Deliria makes the games all about herself. Meanwhile, Hippocampus and Shlub track and catch the city’s first serial killer.
